The model handed to most men says: think harder, optimize more, push through. Strength is stoicism. Answers live in your head. When something isn't working, reason your way out of it.
But here's what that model gets wrong. Experience doesn't begin in your mind. According to Dr. Stephen Porges's Polyvagal research, 80% of the information in your nervous system flows upward — from the body to the brain. The body is the front line of experience. It registers what's happening before your thoughts have a chance to.
Which means when you only live in your head, you're making decisions from incomplete information. You're reacting to stories your mind assembles after the fact — not to what's actually happening in real time.
This is not a character flaw. It's a systems failure. And it's fixable — once you learn to read the signal your body is already sending.
Somatic Signal is MELD's entry-level course — 8 chapters across 4 phases that teach you the foundational skill underlying all of MELD's deeper work: the ability to sense what's happening in your body while it's happening.
This isn't meditation or mindfulness as you may have encountered it before. It's a practical, science-grounded skill called interoception — the awareness of your internal physical experience — and it is the single most powerful early-warning system you have.
When you can read the signal — the tightness in your chest, the heat in your face, the hollow in your belly — before your mind writes a story about what it means, you gain a gap. And in that gap lives choice.
You know your patterns. You've probably talked about them in therapy or with a partner. But understanding them doesn't stop them from running when the pressure is on. That's because insight alone can't reach the nervous system. This course goes to where behavior is actually decided.
Not depressed, not struggling — just slightly off. Like part of you is watching your life rather than living it. You show up, you perform, but some felt sense of being genuinely present keeps eluding you. Somatic Signal helps you find your way back into your own experience.
You don't know exactly what's missing, but you know something is. You want to be better — in your relationships, your leadership, your day-to-day. And you're looking for a starting point that works from the actual mechanism, not another framework to intellectualize. This is the right first step.
80% of your nervous system's information flows upward from body to brain. Most development programs work entirely top-down. Somatic Signal works at the source.
We don't anchor your identity in wounds or encourage you to excavate your past indefinitely. Men are agents to be trained, not problems to be fixed. Somatic Signal gives you a practical skill, not a diagnosis.
No accountability check-ins or goal-setting worksheets. We train the layer underneath motivation — your nervous system — where your actual behavior under pressure is decided. Change that doesn't hold under stress isn't change.
Not progressive, not reactionary, not spiritual bypassing. If an approach collapses when real pressure is applied, we discard it — regardless of how sophisticated or virtuous it sounds. Function over fashion, always.
Every chapter includes a scripted practice, a body-based exercise, and journaling prompts. You will feel something shift in the first session. This work starts in your body — which means it starts now, wherever you are.
Each phase builds on the last. By the end, you're more self-aware, and operating from a different layer of your experience. Work through it at your own pace, with full lifetime access.
You've been living from the neck up. This phase begins the reawakening — teaching you to notice, name, and trust the physical signals your body has been sending all along.
Fight, flight, and freeze aren't character flaws — they're survival strategies running on old code. Understanding the system gives you the leverage to begin changing it.
This is where the work becomes practical. You'll learn to separate the raw physical signal from the story your mind builds around it — the gap where choice actually lives.
The goal isn't to eliminate stress. It's to stay present within it. This phase trains your nervous system to meet pressure without collapse, withdrawal, or overcompensation.
Most men operating today were handed a script that worked for a different era — one that didn't ask them to be present fathers, genuine partners, grounded leaders, and functional human beings simultaneously. The old model optimized for performance and suppression. It ignored the biological reality that stress, left unresolved, doesn't disappear. It accumulates.
The result isn't just personal. It shows up in the people closest to you — in the distance your partner feels, in the edginess your kids sense, in the decisions you make under pressure that you regret. This work starts with one man learning to read his own signal. But the effects move outward in ways no external mandate can replicate.
A more present partner and father at home
A calmer, more decisive presence at work
A man his community can actually lean on

Duncan Rich is a MELD Facilitator and one of the co-founders of MELD Community. He developed Somatic Signal to give men access to the foundational layer of this work — one that can be done alone, at home, on their own schedule — before they step into a live training environment.
Duncan's approach is grounded, non-performative, and direct. He doesn't ask men to believe anything in advance. He asks them to notice what's already happening in their own bodies — and then teaches them what to do with what they find.
The curriculum draws on the lineages of Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing), Stephen Porges (Polyvagal Theory), Ron Kurtz (Hakomi), Sue Johnson (EFT), Richard Schwartz (IFS), Neurolinguistic Programing, Ericksonian Hypnosis — distilled and filtered through Owen Marcus's 30+ years of men's work and Duncan's own training as a MELD facilitator.
A complete self-paced course designed to be completed in 2–4 weeks, or stretched out over as long as you need. No live sessions required. No scheduling. Just you, the material, and your own experience.
Risk-free. If you do the work and don't find value, reach out — we'll make it right.
Recommended path: Somatic Signal is Tier 1 — Entry. It's the foundation beneath everything else in the MELD system. Completing it prepares you for CORE (Tier 2 live group training), the PRIME Retreat, or MELD FORGE.
MELD offers a three-tier system. Every offer has a distinct job. Somatic Signal is where most men begin — the entry point into a coherent methodology that can take you as deep as you're ready to go.
The goal of Somatic Signal isn't achieving a calm mental state or clearing your mind. You're developing interoception — the ability to read your body's physiological signals accurately and in real time. That's a specific, trainable skill, explicitly connected to your stress response, your emotional experience, and your behavior under pressure.
Many men who've tried meditation without much success find this approach more accessible, because it gives them something concrete to notice and do — beyond simply a state to achieve.
Because the body is on the front lines of your experience. 80% of the information in your nervous system flows upward from the body to the brain. The mind is subject to your patterns and beliefs, while your body is always in the presnt, and always telling the truth.
Most development approaches work entirely top-down: insight, new beliefs, better frameworks. That works to a point. The point it stops working is when you're stressed, tired, in conflict, or under real load. In those moments, your nervous system is running a program your conscious mind didn't install and often can't override through reasoning alone.Somatic Signal trains at the level where your behavior under pressure is actually decided. That's why the changes hold in real life instead of evaporating when things get hard.
We hear this a lot from men in the beginning. Low somatic (interoceptive) awareness isn't a flaw – it's what happens when you've spent decades optimizing for output and ignoring internal signals. The good news is the skill is genuinely trainable. Most men notice something shifting within the first few exercises, even if it's subtle. The course is built to meet you exactly where you are, even if that's nowhere yet.
Somatic Signal is designed as the entry point into the MELD system. After completing it, the most natural next step is MELD CORE — a 10-week live group training where you develop these skills in real time with other men and a trained facilitator. CORE is where the embodied skill-building deepens significantly, because you're practicing in a live relational environment with real activation happening.
You can also move directly toward the PRIME Retreat if you want an immersive in-person experience of the method first.
Somatic Signal is the first step in learning to trust the most reliable system you have — the one living in your body. Eight chapters. Your pace. Immediate access. One foundational skill that changes everything downstream.
