There is a growing interest in somatic coaching. After studying with the men who started somatic psychotherapy in the 1980s, practicing and teaching somatic therapy myself, and now to watching somatic coaching take off, I couldn’t be happier. Men realize that changing our thoughts can only go so far. For significant and lasting change, we must change what drives the behaviors and experiences that do not serve us well.
When you work with the body, you work at the causal level.
Somatic coaching is a transformative approach that integrates physical awareness and emotional intelligence to enhance men’s health and well-being. This practice focuses on using body-awareness techniques to recognize and regulate emotional and physiological responses to stress, ultimately fostering greater resilience, connections, and personal growth. Designed to bridge the gap between mental and physical health, somatic coaching empowers men to unlock new levels of performance, relational depth, and self-understanding by tuning into the wisdom of their bodies.
At the heart of somatic coaching is the concept of the mind-body connection, which asserts that the mind and body are not separate entities but deeply interconnected. Emotional and psychological stresses can manifest as physical symptoms, and conversely, addressing the body can facilitate emotional healing. Somatic coaching leverages this connection by using body-focused techniques to enhance mental clarity, emotional stability, and overall well-being.
Somatic practices have roots in ancient holistic health philosophies that emphasize the unity of body and mind, as seen in disciplines such as yoga and martial arts. In the modern context, the field of somatology emerged in the early 20th century, with pioneers like Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen exploring the relationship between body postures, movements, and emotional states. Over the decades, these practices have evolved into what we now refer to as somatic coaching, which integrates insights from psychology, neuroscience, and stress physiology to offer a comprehensive approach to personal development.
Body Awareness is the foundation of somatic coaching. It involves teaching men to become more attuned to their physical sensations, recognizing the subtle cues their bodies provide about their emotional states. This heightened awareness helps men identify stress, tension, and emotional discomfort early, allowing for timely intervention. Techniques like mindful body scanning — where men learn to mentally “scan” their bodies for areas of tension or discomfort — and sensory awareness exercises — which enhance sensitivity to physical sensations — are commonly used. By developing a deeper connection with their bodies, men can start to decode their physiological signals and understand how these relate to their feelings and behaviors.
Regulation Techniques in somatic coaching are designed to help men manage and modify their physiological responses to stress, preventing the escalation of stress into anxiety or panic. These methods include controlled breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and grounding techniques. Controlled breathing, for instance, helps regulate the heart rate and can calm the nervous system, making it a powerful tool for managing acute stress. Progressive muscle relaxation teaches men to systematically relax different muscle groups, promoting overall physical relaxation and reducing stress. Grounding techniques focus on reconnecting an individual with the present moment, often using physical touch points to stabilize emotions.
Embodiment Practices encourage men to use their bodies as a tool to anchor themselves in the present moment, enhancing mindfulness and reducing reactivity. These practices include posture awareness exercises, gentle movement sequences such as those found in tai chi or yoga, and dance. The goal is to cultivate a state of being fully present and engaged in the here and now, with a balanced and responsive attitude. By improving posture, men can influence their psychological state and increase their confidence and openness. Movement practices enhance fluidity in the body and mind, easing the rigid patterns of thought and behavior that often accompany stress and emotional distress.
Unlocking Lasting Change Through Deep Experience: The MELD Method focuses on facilitating deep, lasting change by guiding men to reconnect with aspects of themselves that they may have dissociated from due to trauma, stress, or restrictive environments. This method does not merely instruct or provide insights; instead, it facilitates a journey inward, much like the principles found in Internal Family Systems (IFS). It assists men in engaging with and integrating their fragmented or disconnected parts, tapping into their inner resources for healing and wholeness.
Practitioner Approach in the MELD Method The effectiveness of the MELD Method hinges on the somatic coach’s ability to remain connected to their own experiences — even under stress — and to guide others in doing the same. The process begins with the coach helping men move away from intellectualization and toward a more embodied awareness. This involves:
Outcome of the MELD Method By employing this method, men are equipped to reclaim and integrate parts of themselves, leading to a more coherent and empowered identity. The MELD Method is designed to resolve past issues as well as to foster a profound internal harmony that enhances all aspects of life, from personal relationships to professional endeavors.
Enhanced Emotional Resilience and Stress Management Somatic coaching equips men with the skills to not only survive, but to thrive under pressure. The skills taught help men to recognize early signs of stress and apply effective management strategies, leading to enhanced resilience. This improved emotional fortitude is crucial in navigating life’s challenges with confidence and calm.
Improved Physical Health and Reduction in Bodily Tensions One goal is integrating body awareness exercises promoting health and vitality. Men learn to identify and alleviate tension in their bodies, which can prevent chronic pain and improve overall physical well-being. This aspect of somatic coaching is particularly beneficial for men who have physically demanding lifestyles or who want to maintain their health as they age.
Greater Emotional Depth in Relationships and Social Interactions Men gain insights into their emotional patterns and learn how to express themselves more authentically. This leads to deeper connections in relationships and more meaningful social interactions. By understanding and managing their emotional responses, men can build stronger bonds and become more empathetic partners, friends, and colleagues.
Specific Advantages in Contexts Including Leadership, Parenting, and Personal Growth Somatic coaching offers tangible benefits in various aspects of life, including leadership and parenting. Men engaging in this coaching method often report improved decision-making skills, increased empathy, and better conflict-resolution abilities, essential for effective leadership and nurturing parenting.
Several programs and schools offer training in somatic coaching, each with its unique approach and focus. While MELD specifically designs its offerings with a strong emphasis on men’s emotional wellness, other programs generally cater to a broader audience. Here are five top programs/schools for somatic coaching:
Somatic coaching may feel new to you, but it has been developing for fifty years. Its shared roots in psychotherapy, bodywork, mindfulness, and stress and trauma work set it apart from other forms of coaching, which can be useful. Yet, when a man is looking less for sustainable change, somatic coaching could be the best route.
Having trained some of the leading somatic coaches today, I can say that with proper training and practice, a man can change his life and help other men do the same. It is rewarding to know each night as you fall asleep that you made a difference in another man’s life that day.
Take immediate action. Many coaches and schools are glad to speak to you about their work. I know at MELD, we are happy to talk to any man about what he needs.

I also was one of the first to train with Peter Levine, the developer of Somatic Experience, and went on to work with him in different settings.
